Effective use of practice data
Your practice is in possession of a hugely valuable resource. Your electronic clinical record system, be it Vision, Torex, EMIS or whatever contains a huge amount of aluable data on how patients are managed, on prescribing, on referral and on outcomes. At patient level and aggregated this data can be extremely valuable for commissioning, and much of it is notavailable anywhere else, at least not in such a readily accessible form
This course will help you to appreciate how this resource can be used for commissioning. We will explore the different uses of this data - needs assessment, costing, for service redesign, data validation and so on - and look at techniques for analysing and linking the data to other sources to increase its power even more
This is not a course for information specialists; rather we will use practical and participative methods and examples to help you develop your skills as commissioners.
Overall learning aim

- they know what types of data are available on GP systems
- they understand how these data complement other data sources
- they can devise standard collection methods for use across a number of practices
