Practical Needs Assesments
Have you ever wondered what it is that public health specialists actually do? Have you ever wondered what they mean by 'health needs assessment' when in your role you are making (say, clinical) assessments every day? And have you ever dozed off while a grey-suited type spouted on drearily about 'corporate strategy'?
I can't promise to make all of this electrifying but the module will enlighten you with a few simple tools and practical frameworks of value implementing Practice Based Commissioning. The module will fall into three parts and teaching will be participative. Who knows? You might even get the public health bug.
By the end of each session participants should be able to:
Community Profiling:
- Identify reasons for preparing a community profile.
- List factors to include in a community profile.
- List the information sources which might be used in preparing a community profile.
- Prepare a community profile for their own practices.
- Identify the major health care problems in their local practices.
Setting Priorities:
- Understand the value-laden nature of public health decision making.
- Consider criteria that might be used to set priorities.
- Score participants' identified health problems using an agreed set of criteria.
- Make a final choice of health problem for use in the rest of the workshop.
Formal Needs Assessment:
- Consider detailed approaches to the assessment of health care needs.
- Define the natural history of a chosen health issue (priority).
- Write clear aims and objectives.
- Understand how to plan an appropriate, evidence-based programme of care.
